People are shaped by their experiences. Many grow and change through tragedy, love or loss; in Liesel’s case, books were the catalyst for dealing with her life. All three books played a significant role in the formation of Liesel’s journey. The Gravedigger’s Handbook was her first transition into a world she was not exposed to before. Hans was a big part in her initial exposure. Unlike the first book to cross Liesel’s hands, The Shoulder Shrug marked the awakening of Liesel to the injustices happening and her first act of defiance. The Whistler taught Liesel to appreciate the relationships she had while providing her a bridge to create new ones. All these books played an important role in Liesel’s life. The books show different attributes that Liesel has picked up from living on Himmel Street. These traits are the ones she will hold on to for the rest of her life, as this was the best time in her life.
